Maurer’s project manager Laurie Jackson echoes this collective design ethos: “We worked closely with the Shepherds, Preservation NC, and the State Historic Preservation Office to design a program and floor plan that allowed the continued use of the building in a way that made sense, and also respected the historical context and architectural integrity of the building.”

The same attention to detail has been given to launching Seabird at the right time. Originally slated to open in 2020, the process has taken a bit longer. Neff has been working with Raleigh developer James Goodnight, who owns the building at 1 South Front Street.
“James is very much into bringing these old buildings back to a better state,” Neff said. “He made me feel really good about the whole relationship when he said, ‘I think a restaurant is the perfect thing for this building because it will allow the maximum amount of people to enjoy the space.’”
They sought the help of Old School Rebuilders of Wilmington, Maurer Architecture of Raleigh, and Atlanta designer Smith Hanes to bring the space to life and make it “feel like Wilmington.”

A few pictures from our project with Raleigh Founded in Gateway Plaza, which is one of several office and co-working spaces in the area. This space offers office suites that are different sizes to meet the needs of small to large companies, as well as conference rooms, open workspaces, a beer & coffee bar, break kitchen, and a few phone booths.
The space is coming together beautifully at Seabird in Wilmington! The new storefront, designed using historic photos as a reference, has been installed with a custom prismatic glass transom made by local artisan Enchanted Realm (or Enchanted Bill, as we like to call him). Tile is being installed and it won’t be too long before Chef Dean Neff can get some cooks in this kitchen!
This project was about honoring the original mid century structure while building a contemporary future. Our goal was to honor the travel lodge era, while creating spaces unique to The Longleaf - preserving the existing facade, removing the arched soffits and bulky columns, and reintroducing the clean lines and slender structure.
