Exciting updates in Lincoln County!
In 2022 the new Lincoln County Courthouse was opened to the public, leaving the original 1923 courthouse vacant as a result. The original building has been a Local Historic Landmark since 1992 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Luckily a committee of local stakeholders was established to determine the future use(s) for the space as opposed to allowing it to remain unoccupied. Its sheer size and central location provides an abundant array of options.
The Maurer team was brought in to guide the committee through variations of proposed occupancies based on recommendations from the UNC School of Governments DFI program and to provide design services for the restoration and renovation of the historic courthouse. The interior of the building is being prepared to allow for future design concepts such as food hall space on the first floor, and flex / event space on the upper level. The basement will likely be renovated to accommodate a bar and lounge area. The second and third floors will be restored to the original 1923 courtroom including the historic balcony overlooking the center of the building.
Current construction efforts seek to restore the building's facade to its 1920s grandeur as well as introduce circulation focused enhancements to the grounds (think more gathering spaces and increased walkability). Demo is officially underway and the 1984 concrete infill floor between the second and “third” floors is almost fully removed!
Swipe for photos and take a look at that double height space and decorative ceiling, previously hidden by the lay-in ceiling.
