The renovation of this former drugstore on Center Street is almost complete. The new space will include a large seating area for Ed's Southern Food & Spirits on the first floor, and two loft apartments upstairs. Our work on the building includes a full facade restoration and a new floor plan which includes restaurant storage below the mezzanine and transforms the second story storage into two new residential units.
This renovation follows the Secretary's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and will be awarded Historic Preservation Tax Credits. Under these standards, we paid close attention to historic details including the windows, cornice, and tilework. The missing cornice at the front entry was reconstructed, the front and side storefronts were removed and rebuilt, parts of the original tile floors were restored, and a new floor was installed to match the existing. The mezzanine, formerly used as drugstore storage, has been re-purposed as a tenant storage area, and the second floor apartments now boast large bright windows which have been reinstalled as originally designed.
Ed's Southern Foods & Spirits has opened, and the residential apartments are scheduled for completion later this month. We could not be more thrilled with the results.
The upstairs apartments are currently under construction. Stay tuned for images of the finished space. The photos below show the residential units mid-renovation. The spaces are expected to be completed in the next several weeks.
