The Stone Houses are officially open to the public!
On May 31st the Dix Park Conservancy hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completed restoration of these 3 historic homes.
A true reflection of the hospital’s history, the stone houses were built in the early 1920’s as part of the post World I expansion to provide housing for doctors and other hospital staff members. The homes were aptly named the Superintendent’s House, Physician’s House, and Gatekeeper’s Cottage.
One of the primary goals in preserving the buildings was to honor the residential past of the hospital while also celebrating the future role the stone houses will play in supporting Dix Park’s theme of “a park for everyone, built by everyone”.
Because the stone houses serve as the historical gateway to the park, this renovation is among the first of many projects being implemented at Dix Park. The new design creates an accessible path from the nearby greenway up to the stone houses, and new public restrooms were designed with a terrace above, expanding the original Superintendent’s side porch.
Now that renovations are complete the Gatekeeper’s Cottage serves as a Visitor’s Center for the 308 acre park (maps included!). The Physician’s House will provide office space for the City of Raleigh as well as for artists in residence, and the Superintendent’s House will be event space in addition to offices and meeting rooms for the Dix Park Conservancy.
We are extremely excited for the community to once again utilize and engage with these stunning, historical structures.
