Another completed Historic Tax Credit Project!
Originally built in 1922, the Hagan Building embodies a style popular to Wilson in the 20s - two-story masonry with brick panel accents and cast concrete details. The ten-bay 2nd story has two-over-two sash windows as well as a panel of forty glass squares built into the floor, situated under a skylight to allow natural light to reach the first floor (photo included!). Handsome pressed metal ceilings add to the space’s charm.
Throughout the years the building was occupied by several different wholesale grocers, the National Guard, Carolina Casual Company (blouse manufacturers), and eventually Batten Auto Parts.
Fast forward to 2021 when design work began with the new owners. The storefront would remain retail space while the rear and 2nd floor would be transformed into office space. The goal - designing attentive updates that would maintain and restore the building’s historic character.
217 Barnes St is now home to North State Consulting. In the 1st floor storefront you’ll find Vintage West, a furniture and home decor store.
