This 3 story, historic building located in the heart of downtown Wilson is about to receive a long overdue restoration!
Dating back from between 1908 to 1913, the building was originally built for the Wells Grocery Company owned by a prominent Wilson merchant and tobacconist, and later occupied by G.S. Tucker & Company, a Raleigh-based furniture company which opened its first store in Wilson in 1896.
Circa 1956 the Tuckers completely concealed the impressive brick facade with an attached metal screen. Luckily the pressed metal ceilings and egg-and-dart molding on the 1st and 2nd floor remain intact. The 3rd story is a bit more rustic with a simple ceiling and exposed brick walls.
Plans for the space include converting the 2nd and 3rd floors into 1BR & 2BR apartments. The 1st floor will likely be upfit for a restaurant in the future. Exterior improvements include replacing the storefront and canopy, and a street level entry for the upper level apartments will be added.
Exciting progress is already taking place! The metal screen obscuring the brick facade has been removed, revealing the original window arrangement previously undetectable from the exterior or interior.
